Why ChatGPT SEO is Now Its Own Discipline
Key Stat
ChatGPT has ~12% of Google's search volume but sends 47-190× less traffic. The traffic it does send converts 31% higher than non-branded Google organic. Sources: OpenAI announcements, ALM Corp analysis of 2025 ecommerce data, Seer Interactive case study.
ChatGPT reached 900 million weekly active users in February 2026 — up from 800 million in October 2025 — and crossed 1 billion monthly active users by June 2026, according to OpenAI's own reporting. Users now send more than 2.5 billion messages per day. Somewhere between 5% and 25% of those messages trigger a web search that surfaces citations, depending on query type. That is a search surface roughly 12% the size of Google's — and growing fastest among the exact audience most agencies target: professionals in the 25-44 bracket with buying authority.
But the traffic profile is upside-down. ChatGPT's estimated click-through rate on cited sources is about 1.3%, compared to Google's ~29.2% — a 22× CTR gap. That gap explains why ChatGPT sends 47–190× less referral traffic than Google organic even at 12% of the query volume. What ChatGPT sends, however, converts. Full-year 2025 ecommerce data from 94 sites showed ChatGPT traffic converting 31% higher than non-branded Google organic. A Seer Interactive case study logged ChatGPT traffic converting at roughly 16% versus 1.8% for Google organic.
So the strategic question is not "should we optimise for ChatGPT?" — the answer is obviously yes. The real question is: what are you actually optimising for? ChatGPT indexes off Bing, not Google. It retrieves an order of magnitude more pages than it cites. It weights Reddit, Wikipedia, and LinkedIn heavier than Google does. It treats freshness differently. It has no PageRank. Every one of those differences means the tactics that got you to page 1 in Google are necessary but not sufficient — and some are actively counterproductive.
How ChatGPT Actually Picks the Pages It Cites
OpenAI has confirmed that ChatGPT Search uses "third-party search providers" — the primary one being Microsoft Bing — plus content from direct partnerships with publishers. When a query triggers web search, ChatGPT sends the query to Bing, receives a set of candidate pages, and then routes those pages through its own retrieval and reranking pipeline before writing the answer.
The pipeline has three phases you can target:
1. Retrieval. Bing returns a candidate set — usually 20-40 pages. If your page is not in Bing's index, you cannot be cited by ChatGPT. Period. Google indexation is irrelevant here. This is the single biggest oversight in most "AI SEO" audits.
2. Reranking and chunk selection. ChatGPT breaks candidate pages into passages, embeds each passage, and scores them against the query embedding. High-scoring passages get pulled into the model's context window. The typical modern reranker uses a cross-encoder on top of vector similarity — meaning the passage that gets selected is the one that most directly answers the question, not just the one from the highest-authority domain.
3. Citation and answer synthesis. This is where the drop-off gets brutal. Research analysing ChatGPT's behaviour found that only about 15% of retrieved pages are ultimately cited in the answer. The other 85% are read, weighed, and silently discarded. What survives to citation tends to be pages that (a) directly answered the specific sub-question ChatGPT is trying to resolve, and (b) demonstrated first-hand source authority — the entity the query is about, or the primary research the model needs to attribute.
A revealing finding: only about 12% of URLs cited by ChatGPT also rank in Google's top 10. This is not two search engines producing similar results with different UIs. It is two fundamentally different retrieval systems that happen to answer questions in language.
The 6 ChatGPT SEO Ranking Factors That Actually Work
💡 Pro Tip
If you have to pick one thing to fix first: verify in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap. This unlocks ChatGPT visibility for pages Google has been ranking for months but Bing has never seen.
Audit Action Tiers
Broken tracking, critical SEO errors, active budget waste costing you money today.
Landing page improvements, keyword refinements, content gaps on high-traffic pages.
New channel launches, content calendar, attribution model migration.
1. Bing indexation and crawler access. This is the ante. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools. Submit your XML sitemap. Check that your robots.txt does not block BingBot or OAI-SearchBot. If you use a firewall (Cloudflare, Sucuri, etc.), whitelist those user agents. If you cannot see your page in a Bing site: query, you cannot be cited in ChatGPT.
2. Answer-first extractable structure. Start each section with a direct 40-60 word answer to the question the H2 asks. This inverted-pyramid structure raises extraction rates measurably because the reranker can lift a complete answer block without paraphrasing. Follow the answer with the supporting detail, benchmarks, and nuance. Do not bury the lede under 300 words of throat-clearing — the passage that gets embedded is usually the first meaningful paragraph after the heading.
3. Entity establishment. ChatGPT strongly rewards being the recognised primary source for an entity — a person, a company, a concept, a product. This means: a canonical about page for your organisation, consistent NAP (name, address, phone) across the web, an Organization and Person schema block, a Wikipedia article if the entity is notable enough, and consistent naming in third-party mentions. If your brand is spelled three ways across the web, the model treats you as three fuzzy entities and cites none of them well.
4. Original research and first-party data. ChatGPT preferentially cites pages that are the source of a statistic, benchmark, or dataset — not pages that quote it. This is a real edge for agencies: run a small survey, publish the raw numbers with a clear methodology, and every downstream citation flows back to your URL. Semrush, Ahrefs, HubSpot, and OpenView do this systematically and it dominates their AI citation share.
5. Schema markup — Organization, Article, FAQPage, HowTo, BreadcrumbList. These are not tie-breakers; they are the machine-readable spine ChatGPT uses to understand what a page is. Article schema with a clear author, datePublished, and dateModified. FAQPage schema on any page with a Q&A block. Organization schema on your homepage with logo, sameAs (social links), and areaServed. Analysis of 5 million cited URLs found that pages with Organization, Article, and BreadcrumbList schema appear disproportionately in AI citations.
6. Freshness signals and cross-platform consistency. ChatGPT weights dateModified heavily. Update your evergreen pieces every 3-6 months with a real content change (not just a date bump). Cross-platform means: if you claim a stat on your site, that same stat should appear on your LinkedIn, your podcast transcript, your YouTube description, and any partner republish. The model corroborates across sources — a claim that appears in five places under your name is weighted higher than a claim on your site alone.
What ChatGPT Rewards That Google Doesn't
The most consequential difference is source diversity. Google's ranking system evolved to reward authoritative publisher domains — Forbes, Wikipedia, news outlets. ChatGPT's does too, but with a much heavier weight on community and reference sources.
A June 2025 Semrush study of over 150,000 AI citations across 5,000 keywords found Reddit represented 40.1% of LLM references, ahead of Wikipedia at 26.3% and YouTube at 23.5%. ChatGPT alone cites Wikipedia in a range historically as high as 26-48% of responses, though citation share is volatile month-to-month. This has three practical consequences for anyone doing ChatGPT SEO in India or globally:
- Reddit is now a paid-media-adjacent channel for AEO. Genuine participation in subreddits relevant to your service area — answering questions on r/marketing, r/SEO, r/DigitalMarketing, r/IndianStartups — meaningfully lifts brand mention rate in ChatGPT. Not link-drops. Substantive answers under a real handle.
- Wikipedia entity presence matters more than most agencies think. If you or your company meets notability standards, having a well-cited Wikipedia article is arguably the single highest-leverage AEO investment. If you don't meet notability, focus on getting cited in Wikipedia articles adjacent to your space — as a source, not a link.
- LinkedIn thought leadership under a real named author is disproportionately cited. Company page posts are largely ignored. Long-form personal posts from founders and consultants — especially with original charts, screenshots, or numbers — are increasingly cited as first-party sources.
The second consequential difference is that ChatGPT rewards topical density more than link authority. A cluster of 6 interconnected pages on "attribution modeling" from a mid-authority site can out-cite a single high-authority page from a household-name domain. This is why the hub-and-spoke content architecture — one strategic overview page linked to 3-5 tactical deep-dives — has become the dominant AEO content pattern. Our own strategic AEO guide works this way; this article is one of its deep-dive spokes.
How to Check If You're Being Cited in ChatGPT
There are three ways to measure ChatGPT visibility, ordered from free to expensive.
Manual prompt testing (free, weekly, 30 minutes). Write down 15-25 queries a prospect would ask when researching your service — "best PPC agency in Bangalore", "how much does an SEO audit cost in India", "what is answer engine optimisation". Run each prompt in ChatGPT with web search enabled. Log which sources are cited, whether your brand is mentioned, and the sentiment of any mention. Do this monthly to establish a baseline before you invest in tooling.
Free AI visibility checkers. Ahrefs' AI Visibility Checker and HubSpot's AI Search Grader both run a fixed set of prompts and score your brand's mention rate across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews at no cost. Useful for a directional read; not comprehensive.
Paid AEO tracking tools. Profound, AthenaHQ, Peec AI, Otterly.AI, and Ahrefs Brand Radar monitor a larger prompt library across more platforms, and their pricing varies widely. On their own pricing pages, Otterly.AI lists $29 to $489 a month, AthenaHQ Starter is $295 a month, and Ahrefs Brand Radar is listed from $199 a month. Profound quotes enterprise pricing on request, and we could not confirm Peec AI's price from its own page. A 30-day comparison test found AthenaHQ delivered a 45% net gain in answer share, Peec AI 8%, and Profound a 1% decline — but tool efficacy varies significantly by category and query set, so budget for a trial period on at least two before committing. Ahrefs Brand Radar is listed from $199/month (custom-prompt tracking from $50/month) and covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, and Copilot; the tool's own limitation is that it uses a static prompt library and timed snapshots rather than live queries, which can miss actual mentions.
Pricing verified 28 September 2026 against each vendor's own website. Plans and prices change often, so confirm on the vendor's site before you buy.
We cover the measurement layer in more depth in how to measure AEO — brand visibility in AI answers.
The 30-Day ChatGPT SEO Checklist
Week 1 — Foundations. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools. Submit XML sitemap to Bing. Audit robots.txt to ensure BingBot and OAI-SearchBot are not blocked. Confirm Organization, Person, and WebSite schema is on your homepage. Confirm Article schema on every blog post with author, datePublished, dateModified.
Week 2 — Content structure. Pick your 10 highest-traffic content pages. Rewrite the intro paragraph of each so the first 40-60 words directly answer the primary query. Add an FAQ block at the bottom of each with FAQPage schema. Add breadcrumb navigation with BreadcrumbList schema.
Week 3 — Entity establishment. Publish one original data piece — a survey of 50-100 clients, a benchmark report, a proprietary methodology. Assign it a canonical URL and cite it in every relevant existing article. Update your LinkedIn company page and founder profiles to align exactly with your site's Organization and Person schema (same title, description, and sameAs URLs).
Week 4 — Community and measurement. Identify 5 subreddits and 3 LinkedIn newsletters where your service area is discussed. Establish authentic presence: answer 2-3 questions per week, no self-promotion in the first month. Run your baseline manual prompt test (15-25 prompts, log citations). Set a monthly review calendar item to re-run the same prompts and track mention rate change.
Expect the first citation lifts within 60-90 days. AEO case studies consistently show measurable results within 90-120 days, with the technical work landing first and content citations following as AI engines re-crawl and re-index. AI citations, mentions, and brand awareness typically lift weeks or months before referral traffic changes — so track citations, not clicks, as your leading indicator.
